Lackawanna: Past to Present
Before 1842, the area now known as Lackawanna was a major part of the Buffalo Creek Reservation. Sold in 1842 by the Seneca tribe, this area was then founded as the town of Seneca. Leading up to the 20th century, the town’s name morphed several times. Variations included Seneca, West Seneca, Limestone Hill, and, finally, Lackawanna.
Upon its founding, the city quickly became a hub of steel manufacturing. Several notable manufacturers, including the Lackawanna Steel Company, relocated and invested in the city as their home. These operations largely led residents in the area to split from West Seneca, officially forming Lackawanna in the early 20th century.
Today, the city is still largely active in the steel industry. However, quite a bit of this activity is related to the Steel Winds project; a wind energy farm located on the coast of Lake Erie.
Lackawanna is also a bedroom community for the many businesses located in Buffalo. It’s a short, 10-minute commute from central Lackawanna to downtown Buffalo.
